You can also adjust your settings to allow Yelp to receive your location while the app runs in the background. This allows you to receive updates about nearby businesses and events via push notification, and better personalizes your local experience on Yelp.
To turn on location access on an iPhone or iPad
- Tap on your device's Settings app
- Tap Privacy
- Tap Location Services
- Toggle the switch to On
- Scroll down to the Yelp app icon
- Select While Using the App or Always
Alternatively you can change these settings from inside the iPhone or iPad app

- Tap Location Settings which will take you to your device’s main settings
- Tap Location
- Select While Using the App or Always
To turn on location access on an Android device
- Tap on your device's Settings app
- Tap Location
- Tap Google Location Reporting
- Tap Location Reporting
- Toggle the switch to On
Alternatively, you can change these settings from inside the Android Yelp app
- Tap More
- Tap Settings
- Tap Location Access
- Clicking on your current setting will take you to the App info page
- Click on Permissions, then Location
- Select Allow all the time or Allow only while using the app
You can still search for businesses without turning on location access - just make sure that you are removing the "Current location" option when conducting a search, and that you are entering the city or zip code manually.
